One City. One Hospital. One Soul At A Time.

Our story

EAMRF is a California-based, non-profit organization founded in 2012 to improve access to quality healthcare in Oromia which is Ethiopia’s largest and most populous regionone city, one hospital and one soul at a time.

Our Goals

"Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity." - Hippocrates

Provide direct care to as many children and women with heart disease as possible

Prevent the spread of infectious disease and reduce infant mortality rate in Oromia Region

Regularly send donated medications, medical/surgical supplies and/or equipment to hospitals in the Oromia region

Expand our work to other cities, hospitals and health centres in the region one soul, one hospital, and one city at a time

Build a diagnostic and imaging centre in Nejo. The proposed diagnostic centre will benefit an estimated 1.5-2 million people in the area, and it will be a first for the Western Oromia region

Continually train doctors, surgeons, nurses and other medical staff so that they ultimately can provide basic care for their own people in the community

Our Problem
Statement

The Current Situation

Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country and is one of the poorest on earth. An overwhelming majority of Ethiopia’s 123 million people lack access to basic healthcare.

An estimated 50,000 Ethiopian children are born with congenital heart disease annually, but almost all are not able to afford life-saving surgery. For thousands more, communicable, but deadly, diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, waterborne diseases, pneumonia, and goiter are causing early death. Meanwhile, the country’s health policies struggle to keep pace with unprecedented population growth. In Ethiopia:

  •  6% of all children in Ethiopia are orphans.
  • One in every 13 children dies before their first birthday.
  • More than 37% of children under the age of 5 are malnourished.
  • 4 out of 5 families live on less than $2.00 (USD) a day.

In rural areas, less than 1 in 3 families have access to a clean water source.
According to the CIA world factbook, Oromia’s population is about 35.8% of Ethiopia’s total population. There are 31 hospitals and 242 health centres in the Oromia region. Patient to Doctor ratio in the Oromia region is 0.022 Physicians /1000 people. The services provided in hospitals in the Oromia region is substantially low, and the hospitals are underserved and under-equipped.
